What does the adjustment on the front of the transmission do? It has a bolt with a screw that turns and on the engine cove it says "Increase or decrease play"

How do you adjust the clutch on the front of the engine? I bought a 250EX for my daughter and it slams into gear. What can I do to soften it up? Do I increase the play? Thanks..
