crossing over to the darkside!

ok guys im thinkin of getting a dirtbike when i sell the 2 warriors.
ok, i'm 40, 195 lbs and i want to get a 4 stroke.
was wondering what size for mx would fit.
i was thinking either a 250 or 400.
im not sure if the 250 is too small or the 400 may be too big for jumping.
what do you all think.

Kawa has a nice 300 4 stroke, that's a perfect size and has a MX suspension.

you could get a 250f for about 2500 or less depending on what shape the bike is . or a 450 great power!! it all depends on your budget man!! i ride a 03 cr 125 and it rips just fine !!!!!
its a different world on two wheels....

Gery,
I have a 2003 Yamaha YZ 250 four stroke and that thing has plenty of power to get me up and going. I'm 6'2" and 195 pounds. I have never taken it to an MX track, I have only done trail riding, so I can't comment on it takes the jumps. But as far as power, I think it has plenty of it.

yah thats what ive heard. but the dirtbikers look like they are much more aggresive and are having alot of fun.
whats your opinion lawnman, having ridden both.
i would think that dirtbike is much more "technical" then 4 wheelers.

The only thing that has stopped me from getting a dirtbike other than my size is the fact that when I stop I have to balance it. The quad eliminates that problem.

Gery, if you have a lot of sugar sand where you ride I'd stick with 4 wheels. Only way to keep a bike going in sugar sand is you have to be on the gas the majority of the time. But atleast with quads you have a place to sit and drink a beer.

As you can see, i have one each
sport quad
4x4 quad
MX dirt bike
Whether or not you have fun all depends on what you want to do, thus why i have one of each, i can't make up my mind, i love them all, having the Predator for fast hard surfaces and going fast, the 4x4 for putting around, mudding and just having fun with friends, the bike for ripping through the woods on tight trails with firm ground.

this be muddy buddys friend. my dad and me shared that crf250R and it was amazing. way more than enough power. my dad is 6'6" 275 and it pulled him really fast. we had a drz 400 and i was ridin my dads friends crf250 and my dad was on the drz 400 and i pulled him in every gear. the crf was all stock. and ours was a lot faster than that one. ours had a full carbon pro 2 pipe, all kinda of engine work, all ti bolts, and just al kinds of crap on it. im 6'1" 180 and it was awesome. i like the quads more though for jumpin and stuff. that is personal preferance though. i love the bikes for the woods though. im eventually gonna get another 250 in a year or 2. so by then ill have a 450R and a crf 250 to play on.

about the sugar sand - it sucks on a dirt bike. used to have an xr100 and rode trails with bad sand and practically had to walk it through it. i just wanted to make the sand thing clear

sugar sand is easy to ride through. just stay in the gas and it goes fine.

why does sugar sand suck? trust me, i was havin trouble at first too but my cousin who raced hare scrambles on bikes told me to hang it wide open and it will go fine. it is a blast too. the only time i ever wrecked or got really squirrely after that was in a section of huge whoops in ocala and i went down hard cause i tried to stay in it. give it a try next time you ride a bike. pinn the throttle and you wont have a single problem.

Agreed, it's the slow and intermediate speeds where you have problems in thick sand, as long as you're hauling butt you're good to go, not to mention letting a little air out of the tires is highly recommended, you go into thick sand with rock hard tires (especially front) and you're asking to be dumped.

I agree with what you all are saying about the sugar sand. Thats all I rode through this past weekend in Ocala. You gotta ride fast in that stuff or else you will be all over the place and lose control of your bike. When riding a quad you don't really have to worry about balance all the time but its a whole different story with a dirt bike. Gery, just make sure you take your time getting used to the bike and how it handles in different situations before you push it. They are a ton of fun though, but be careful.

well, the trails i ride are extra sweet sugar sand and are all rutted up from the atvs and trucks going through. this is a main trail im talking about. you can go fast but you wont be going in a straight line and the sand decides where your front tires will turn next. so you will be ridding in between two ruts and it will throw you in the middle. you can not stop because you wont be ale to get back going again. but the problem isnt getting stuck because yes -just keep the throttle open but you still cant handle the bike that great. most sugar sand, if its not all tore up, i can go through all right and if you go fast it is fun. im preety good on a dirtbike but you all know its hard as crap sometimes on a soft trail that everyone rides through so dont say oh its no problem and pretend like it only happens to inexperienced riders

.... or the 400 may be too big for jumping.
what do you all think.
"Oh Jesus Christ, Nancy, just put down your purse, hop on, get it into 4th gear and jump it."
You want the 450r...it's perfect for a guy of your size. Plus, it's really fast, and the suspension is amazing, it's like landing in a huge pile of cotton when you overshoot a table top by 30 feet.
But seriously, why would you want a 2 wheeler in Florida when you can have this.....
Besides, put this bad boy in the garage, and Klutch will get straight A's for the rest of his life. (Who'd want to be grounded for this)
