I am coming over from the 4x4 and I was wondering what bike would be good for a beginner. I am mostly going to use the bike for trail riding, and then later on MX.

Thanks

The Z400 is a great bike and more comfy than the 450s. If you are a begginer it would be a great bike. If you are serious about going fast then you cant go wrong with any of the 450s. You can NOT make a 400 perform like a 450 for the price difference between them.

I agree w/ Chillin!  If you go with the 400, then the z400 is definately the best quad, hands down!  But the 450's are a differant story!  You almost have to ride all of them to see which you prefer.  But my suggestion would be the 450R.

go with a 400ex or a 450r. the 450 is a ton faster than the 400 though. i agree you need to ride them both to see what u like.

Yeah, I was looking at the 400ex. But why does everyone,or atleast those two people say the z400 over the 400ex?

z has an updated engine, reverse, better suspension, faster.
The z is just a better updated 400cc bike.

Well I'm not looking for a lot of speed right now. But I would think if the '06 250ex has reverse the 400ex would to.

[/quote]It does, but price wise, you can pick up an 03 z for about 2k cheaper then an 05 400ex.

Honestly you will be much  Grin on a Z400 than a 400ex, the Z is an all around better bike, that is faster but not insane, it is the perfect all around sport bike in my eyes, the 450's all are speed oriented, and the smaller sports don't cut it.... That leaves the big bores (Raptor 660, DS650, KFX700...) so if speed is not what you are looking for stay away from these. The Z400 is the better of the two 400's, by far...Everyone I know that has owned a 400ex dislikes them and wants to upgrade to a Z or a 450. The Z400 has everything spot-on, where as the 400ex lacks in areas.... Just make sure if you get a Z to check and see if the previous owners or dealership has changed the clutch cover if it is the 05' and 06' models.

I dont know cause when suzuki did a bunch of little improvments to their z400 i dont know if it carried over to the kfx or the dvx? Anyway, i've rode a stock z400 and their all the power you'ed ever need out on a trail. As far as racing you'll have to talk to somebody else. I read allot of the mags and research like that cause im too poor to afford these bikes. But there right. A Z is probably your best bet unless you trip over a kick @$$ deal on a 400ex cause the aftermarket is loaded with parts for both bikes.

i have a YFZ450 and my cuzin has 2 Z-400's parsonally 4 the track the 450 is the fastest
but the the z-400 is alot more comfortable and easy 2 ride compared to the 450. also on the trail its a little easyer 2 ride only cuz the YFZ throtle is pritty hard but i like both. im just more MX and speed so thats y + i've been riding sport 4 ever

I want to get to MX and speed, but for right now i know the 450 is probably a little too much for me to handle.
