Big scrub sinkhole..

Can we still ride in that thing?...Only respond please if you ACTUALLY know..We aren't gonna trailer all the way up there if it's closed....I wanna take our group up there Sunday.They have never seen it...the one just up past Big Scrub on the right.Huge sinkhole.

I was there on the weekend of the 23rd of Jan.. They still have the telephone poles up around the sink, but the trail going to them was open. With all the changes going on in the forest I would call ahead.

All the sink holes are closed to riding. Another words no riding in the sink holes. I believe JW is right, you can see it, but can't ride it. I saw that sink hole for the first time a couple of months ago, it was awsome.

this is one part of the forestry management that I do not understand at all.  Why close off something to traffic that would naturally bring the area back to what it was before the natural disaster?

There was a VERY steep and deep sinkhole about 2 miles from the campground along the powerlines that was back in the woods not very far that when I started riding out there it was measured at 80' deep.  Everyone who rides out there now knows it as just a small sand pit that is not measurably deep anymore.

why close off the sinkholes?

Maybe I am missing the point - how would riding in a sink hole bring the area back to the way it was. The more you ride in it the more you would churn up the sand and dig deeper holes, thus the sink hole would become deeper. How is that returning the sinkhole back to nature... or maybe I am missing the way it was to begin with.

that is a little off topic but when i was driving back from Elite i saw a sign that said something about sink hole trails? anyone know anything about it?

What Ida is saying is that riding in and out of the sinkholes only tends to fill them back in. They wont get any deeper unless you ride you bike down to the bottom and fill your pockets with sand then ride back out and empty your pockets and repeat.
 The reason they close them is for safety and liability. I was told that someone died in one and the lawsuit that followed required them to close off all pits and sinkholes.
 Basicaly out of 400,000 acres, after they close off the pits, wet areas, water access areas, and any other desireable spots. We can have the leftover flat boring, scruby, trails.

It must been from heavy rain two weeks ago.
I know sinkholes are cuase like that too.

well one year ago we had sinkhole on cr252
over by lake city at s&s store and that house is near second sink hole
and it's almost going into sink hole.
I know part of house front  wood decks went into
sink hole about 6months ago it did.

Well carp..I wanted to show the boys...I had an EXTREMELY hard time running the CR up the smallest trail out of it..It is HUGE!..

Are you talking about the one about a quarter mile to the right of Big scrub when your in Big Scrub looking at the road? That ones pretty deep. The one right off the powerlines is more of a little hill nowadays. So is Blue Sink going to be able to be riden too with these new trails? I think Blue Sink is so much fun, with the clean water and the big rope swings.

I agree with Chillinthemost's post at the end. If a few people could learn how to respect sensitive areas (stay on trails, etc) we wouldn't be slowly be losing moe and more  places to ride. Although, seems mighty confusing to me that clearcutting the forest is ok. Could it be $$$$ that makes it different?

my favorite part about the clear cutting is that they are now leaving a small line of trees towards the roads WITH trees so that you have to drive into the forest a little to notice that there is clear cutting going on.

I think I know the lake one..It's kinda neat but there is another big lake on the opposite side of Scrub waaaaay down the power lines across the 1st road that is aftr Alexander springs.We park there and go into the woods..I'm just lookin for a new spot for us to play in tommorrow..I wanted some nice hills and terrain to play in ya know?
