**I saw this someplace else and thought some others would enjoy this!  Smiley

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the

50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't, had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as
kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

I have some things to add to that:

It took a neighborhood to raise a child.  If you misbehaved at a neighbors the would spank you then call your mom and send you home.  And you always got it worse from your parents when you got home.  And we came out fine.

On road trips there were no headsets, CD, or mp3 players.  We didn't have in ride movies or video's.  You did not get to chose the radio station in the car.  We came up with creative games to entertain ourselves because we didn't dare act up or our parents they'd pull the car over and we didn't want that.

I'm sure I'll come up w/ more but that's what I've got for now.

lay off southerner. i modified it after he posted it.

i remember riding in the back seat(yes, children were not allowed in the front)
listening to music and trying to sing to a tune. well we would always get-
"if you want to sing i'll turn off the radio and we can all listen to you"

also a couple house rules:

1.your watching what i'm watching on tv
(now its easy cause theres multiple tvs, back then one tv per household so we were watching "que pasa usa" and a bunch of spanish "novelas"

2. you wake up the first time i call you.
(the second time its the sandal across your face)

3. we're going to a relatives house dont even dare ask for a glass a water- shut up, sit down and dont move til we leave.

4. "its not fair" phrase didnt exist
     (if it did, you didnt)

5-10. sorry i cant post , they would fall under the "aggravated child abuse" category. but you old schoolers know what i'm talkin about.

Another one:

There was one phone line and no cell phones.  You shared that line with the whole family and had a 15 minute limit on phone calls.  There was no call waiting or answering machines.

We didn't have a whole room full of toys, and a garage with more toys.  We had a box full of toys and we shared them and we were happy about it!  When we played it was interaction with real people not video games.

There were no microwaves.  If you were hungry and wanted to eat you either went w/o or learned to cook it yourself.

You actually think most of these kids do these things even with machines?  Most of the kids I know their parents do all those things for them and they have no chores.

Yep, I agree, Its a shame to say, but my kids 13 and 11, don't even know how to do dishes, its just faster sometimes to do it yourself. I did make a chores list out, but i always tell my kids they have it so much more easier than what we did when we were kids. I didn't have a dishwasher, they got one, easy to load it, lol,

SOME MORE

Mom always said do not sit close to the TV, it will put your eyes out but never did.

I remember riding in the back window of the family automobile.

Riding on the tailgate with our feet hanging off. Even fell off a time or two and had to try and run the truck down because mom did not see me fall. LOL

Built a ramp for my bicycle using a 2X6 and a metal garbage can. Again not helmet. Flipped many times doing this.

Adding front forks to my bicycle to make a chopper. Popped several wheelies and the front tire would fall off sometimes.

Getting a spanking, WITH DADDYS BELT, then going to the bathroom to cry and look at all the bruises on my @ss. Even sometimes getting a spanking while outside while all of the neighborhood friends were outside watching me get one. Never needed any mental help from this either.

I love to read the nostalgic words about times past.  It is a remnder that life is cyclical in nature.  Make no mistake, these are the same things your parents spoke of and the same things that your children will speak of.

LovenIt- My dad use to like to add to your phrase.... "I brought you in I can take you out and make another one look just like you" (stolen from Bill Cosby).

One day when he said that I said no you can't you had your stuff cut or a vasectomy.  Never said that again.  Not a good choice of words.  Never talk back to dad or you will find yourself picking yourself up off the other side of the room.
